Blacks Overrepresented in Violent Crime Arrests: BJS

Blacks were overrepresented among persons arrested for serious nonfatal violent crimes in 2018 relative to their representation in the U.S. population, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics reported on Thursday, based on FBI data. Whites were underrepresented, accounting for 60 percent of U.S. residents but 46 percent of people arrested for rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and other assault, and 39 percent of all arrestees for nonfatal violent crimes.

Hispanics, regardless of their race, were overrepresented among arrestees for nonfatal violent crimes relative to their representation in the U.S. population , BJS said. Based on FBI data and the National Crime Victimization survey for 2018, blacks accounted for 29 percent of violent-crime offenders and 35 percent of violent-crime offenders in incidents reported to police. Victims reported the race or ethnicity of offenders in 75 percent of nonfatal violent crime incidents involving Asian victims, 82 percent of incidents involving Hispanic or Black victims, and 88 percent of incidents involving white victims. Overall, victims in 3.9 million nonfatal violent crime incidents reported information on the race or ethnicity of nearly 5.0 million offenders linked to these incidents, BJS said.
