A manhunt is underway after a North Dakota fugitive shot and wounded two cops hundreds of miles away in Wisconsin early Friday, police said.
Nathanael Benton, 23, is accused of shooting the officers after they confronted him over a hit-and-run crash outside a motel in Delafield, about 27 miles west of Milwaukee, according to a news release. The suspected gunman then fled on foot and remained at large Friday morning.
The officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.
Benton is also wanted for attempted murder in the shooting of a man Sunday morning in Fargo, N.D. The circumstances involving that incident and the condition of the victim are still unclear.
Authorities in the two states urged the public to be on the lookout and contact police if they have any information about the suspect.
“We have reason to believe he is armed and poses a threat to public safety,” the Fargo Police Department said in a Facebook post.
Benton is 6 feet tall, weighs about 215 pounds and has blue eyes and brown hair, according to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin. He was last seen wearing a flat brim hat, a sweatshirt and possibly khakis.
