Man dresses up as a cop, steals donut from convenience store

Daniel Mark Wright

A man in Utah stole a donut from a convenience store whilst impersonating a police office.

Daniel Mark Wright, 47, entered a 7-Eleven in Lehi wearing a jacket with the words “Sheriff’s Deputy” on the back. He then proceeded to shoplift a donut, an act which did not go unnoticed by one of the store’s clerk.

KUTV reports that Lehi police were notified of the man’s thievery, and were told that he had left the convenience store in a white Ford truck. Officers were then able to track down the truck’s location by observing surveillance video footage, eventually finding it in a motel parking lot.

“Officers knocked on the door and made contact with [Wright] as he opened the door and was asked to step outside,” read one of the responding officer’s official report. “A female was also inside of the bedroom and was identified as Christian Olson. While the door was open, I observed the green Salt Lake County Sheriff’s jacket hanging in the entry way closet.”

It appears that Wright’s crimes went far beyond petty fried dough theft, though. Upon further investigation, authorities discovered that the white Ford truck had been stolen, too.

Police have also linked both Wright and Olson to the arrest of Adalberto Ozeta. KUTV additionally reports that Ozeta was taken into custody last weekend after police engaged him in a 100-mile-per-hour car chase. The 30-year-old is suspected to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run, and had also stolen the SUV he was driving.

Wright was eventually arrested on the charges of receiving or transferring of a stolen vehicle, theft, and, of course, impersonating an officer.
