Tragedy in Florida’s Hillsborough County, as authorities reveal that a local sheriff’s deputy was killed in what appears to be a case of vehiclular homicide- all with one shift left before he was scheduled to retire.
HCSO Corporal Brian LaVigne was intentionally struck by an individual fleeing law enforcement, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said Monday night.
The suspect, 28-year-old Travis Zachary Gabriel Garrett, was arrested Monday night and is facing multiple charges.
“He had never hit the brakes,” Chronister said. “There were no skid marks. He was intentionally running that car into the corporal’s car.”
Garrett, who had been visited by deputies shortly prior for erratic behavior, had reportedly begun attacking individuals after the deputies left.
Upon being called to Garrett’s Brandon-area apartment a second time, the man attacked a deputy, shrugging off a stun gun and getting into a car.
As he made his escape, Garrett crossed two lanes of traffic and plowed his vehicle into LaVigne’s marked cruiser, reportedly aiming for the deputy with intent.
Firefighters had to utilize special tools to free the deputy, who died from his injuries at a local hospital.
According to USA Today, LaVigne is survived by his wife and two children, one of whom just happens to also be a deputy at the sheriff’s office.
“Master Corporal Brian LaVigne was a part of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office family since 1990, and he was just one shift away from retirement. We will never forget Master Corporal LaVigne for laying down his life in the line of duty.” – Sheriff Chad Chronister pic.twitter.com/k9H256bDKF
